Hi-Story is one of Sweden’s leading suppliers of audio guide systems and delivers the necessary technology and content for producing a successful tour. During the spring of 2021, I have had the opportunity to re-design the app’s interface, with a strong focus on creating a scalable and user-friendly product.

Their customers mainly consist of municipalities and cultural enterprises, but their goals and needs can vary significantly – From historical museums to city guides or dramatized dystopias. Some customers only have one tour in their app, others have over 20. Some guides are indoors, others outdoors. Some guides are triggered entirely by GPS, others require manual interaction.

In other words, my task was to create a new interface that with minimal effort can be translated from one customer to another. The interface would be divided into two versions: a basic version and an extended version, for customers who need to be able to categorize their guides.

I worked independently as a UX / UI designer and was responsible for user testing, customer interviews, interface design, and delivering a prototype optimized for development.

Methods

  • Customer interviews
  • User testing
  • User journeys
  • Jobs to be done

Requirements

  • Prompt the user to turn on Location services, Bluetooth, and/or Wi-Fi
  • Encourage the user to download the audioguide before start
  • Make the language options more visible and accessible
  • Category and Filter features
  • Optional Newsfeed
  • Optional Quiz feature

Basic vs. Extended

Once inside a started guide, the interface looks the same in both versions, but the user journey to get there looks different. In the extended version, for customers with multible guides within the app, the user can find the right guide via categorization or filtering. The basic version's Home page replaces the Category page, and the bottom menu changes.

The solution

One of the main goals with the re-design was to eliminate pain points where the user can’t start the guide because they have not allowed Location Services (but can’t figure out what has gone wrong by themselves). Therefore I aimed for an informative onboarding and visible system status throughout the interface to encourage and teach the user what and why these settings are considered requirements.

The design is generic and can be applied to all of Hi-Story's potential customers. The onboarding is scalable and can contain any number of pages, depending on the settings required. The background gradient is also standardized – all you need is to add the customer's color scheme.
